LoRaWAN : gateways to all our futures
The Internet of Things (IoT) kicked off in the UK in 2015, with the introduction of low power networks expanding over large distances. This is similar to the way 4g or WIFI works, but using a low powered frequency, which allows devices to connect and interact with each other using minimal battery power - making it environmentally friendly and low cost for the end user.
These networks are supported by what are known as LoRaWAN gateways, particularly for industrial level IoT, which demands cost effective, long-range and power -efficient sensors. LoRaWAN is the global standard point to multipoint networking protocol and each gateway is able to support up to 10,000 things within a range of 10km, with devices lasting up to 5 years.
The IoT community continues to develop rapidly, as we reflect on some interesting figures from The Things Network website - a global collaborative Internet of Things ecosystem that creates networks , devices and solutions using LoRaWan - essentially a network of LoRaWan professionals:

And when we turn our attention to the UK, we see an interesting spread in terms of regions which are using this technology. Norfolk ( 80 gateways) , Devon & Cornwall ( 31 gateways) and here in North Wales ( 55 gateways in Anglesey and Gwynedd ) reveal some thought provoking figures, suggesting perhaps the versatility and adaptability of this technology over rural land:

February 2022 - Severn Trent Water announced a £20m smart water network, using 150,000 LoRaWan water metres
70,000 street lighting system in Montevideo using LoRaWan, the largest project of its kind to date, covering an area of 200 square kilometres and claimed to reduce carbon emissions by 80%
Building management - LoRaWAn providing facilities management solutions with companies such as AmbiTek using the technology to monitor air quality and water pipe condition
Asset tracking systems - LoRaWan utilised to provide real-time data of assets being transported - such as Norsea at Amsterdam and Rotterdam ports
Smart irrigation - Zenzeio using this technology to achieve water and fertiliser saving
Smart parking - transmitting accurate information on the availability of parking spaces with companies such as Bosch assisting in the development of ‘smart cities’ for the convenience and safety of inhabitants
Cattle tracking - smart ear tags and solar powered collars being used to monitor and guide cows around fields, saving the farmer time and effort
